CSIRO seeks AI and digital tech SMEs for R&D program

Australia's national science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), has opened applications for its latest Innovate to Grow program, which targets small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) working in artificial intelligence and digital technologies.

The free eight-week online program aims to help businesses transform early-stage ideas into actionable research plans and funding roadmaps by providing access to R&D experts, industry mentors and self-paced learning modules.

Applications for the program close on June 1, with participation available to SMEs developing solutions across several key technology subsectors.

"Australian SMEs are at the frontier of our digital and AI opportunity," Michelle Armistead, program manager for Innovate to Grow, said.

Armistead said the program helps connect founders with critical resources needed to develop investable R&D projects, regardless of whether they are working on large-language models, factory robotics or cybersecurity solutions.

Since launching in 2020, the program has supported more than 650 SMEs across Australia, positioning them to navigate the rapidly evolving technology landscape.

It is specifically designed for businesses working in artificial intelligence subdivisions such as computer vision, machine learning, large language models and natural language processing.

The program also targets companies focused on digital manufacturing, quantum computing, cybersecurity, and robotics and autonomous systems.
