Bendigo Telco slashes storage costs with SwiftStack

Bendigo Telco has saved 33 percent on overall recurring storage costs and 50 percent on storage expansion after transitioning to object storage with US-based software provider SwiftStack.

The local telco opted for SwiftStack's solution because it was easy to use and provided all the benefits of object storage "but without the typical implementation headaches", according to Bendigo Telco system manager Regan Klemm.

"After extensive research, we found that SwiftStack’s cost per TB was the most affordable compared to other vendors. We would ultimately cut the cost of our storage growth by 50 percent while also saving approximately 33 percent on ongoing storage costs compared to what we were paying previously," said Klemm.

Klemm added that the solution helped Bendigo Telco to improve the way it does back-ups for customers.

According to SwiftStack, Bendigo's IT team would spend up to six hours managing the replications process associated with its back-up as-a-service. The US vendor also helped Bendigo to introduce advanced data protection with built-in automated policies that simplified management and reduce the time required to replicate and recover data.

"We have the ability to help grow the business and pursue offering other file-based services direct to customers. We are looking into also implementing the Filesystem Gateway that SwiftStack offers," said Klemm.

Bendigo has recently rolled out 400TB of raw storage across two data centres. Bendigo’s SwiftStack solutions sits behind virtual load balancers with full 10GB connectivity between data centres.

Currently Bendigo is storing roughly 250TB worth of data with four copies for durability and responsiveness.
