AWS Lake Formation goes live in Australia

Amazon Web Services has set its AWS Lake Formation service live in its Asia Pacific (Sydney) region.

Lake Formation allows users to set up a secure data lake - a centralised, curated and secured repository for data.

Data lakes enable users to break down data silos and combine different types of analytics, which helps gain insights and guide business decisions.

With Lake Formation, data lakes are created by defining where data resides and what data access and security policies a user wants to apply. Data from databases and object storage are then collected and catalogued before moving to an Amazon S3 data lake.

The data is then cleaned and classified using machine learning algorithms and secures access to sensitive data. After that, users can access a centralised catalog of data, which describes available data sets and their appropriate usage.

Users can also pick their own analytics and machine learning service like Amazon EMR for Apache Spark, Amazon Redshift Spectrum, and Amazon Athena.
