Avnet staff take underprivileged kids out for day of fun

Eight staff members from distributor Avnet took a group of underprivileged Sydney children out for a fun-filled day at the Amazement Farm and Fun Park on the central coast last week.

The kids, aged between 13 and 17 years, were from the Number 47 community house run by the Salvation Army, located within the Ivanhoe public housing estate in the northern Sydney suburb of Ryde.

"The day was a huge success and the team came up with plenty of fun games to keep the kids entertained and ran around after them all day as they explored the park," said an Avnet spokesperson. "They were involved in activities including magical maze walks, sporting games (especially soccer), enchanted forest walks, animal encounters and much more."

The Avnet employees that volunteered for the day were Maria Tran, Andreia Serrao, Shalini Karthikeyan, Mark Johnston, Zoe Gilbert, Augustine Gomes, Rhett Taggart and Renee Rickard.

"The team members who attended all came back with big smiles of their faces, saying they were a fantastic group of kids and lots of fun to be around," said the spokesperson.

Avnet allows every staff member to take one day of paid leave each year to participate in a volunteer cause. The company's charitable program, Avnet Cares, now plans to organise events such as the Number 47 children's excursion each quarter.

The Number 47 community house is operated by a Salvation Army family that commits to living and working within the public housing community.

"This unique model allows them to act as a ‘living mission’, inviting those in the neighbourhood to share their lives together and we build community," read a statement from Avnet.
