Austrade IT export advice hits the road

Austrade hopes to attract fresh blood into the IT export market at Digital Content and Web Services road shows in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne from 16 to 19 March.

Tony Burchill, ICT industry specialist at Austrade, said digital content and web services represented a growing opportunity for Australian companies.
"Australian ICT companies are attracting global attention for excellence in niche areas of digital content production and the rest of the world is starting to sit up and take notice," he said.

The one-day Austrade road shows aimed to show local IT companies how to win a share of that export market, he said.

Austrade said that a recently-released report, "From Cottages to Corporations", suggested that a "vibrant, creative" digital industry could shift Australia from being a net importer of some $1 billion of digital content in 2000-01 to being a net exporter of $1.5 billion by 2010.

Burchill said that filming the "technology-heavy" Matrix trilogy in Australia and recent success of Australian e-learning firms in the UK had promoted this country as a producer of "quality technology".

This week's Digital Content and Web Services Road Show would particularly focus on export opportunities for web development, e-payments, computer-based training, graphic design firms and digital design companies.

Tom Kennedy, CEO of digital content consultancy Hyro, and Robert Hutchinson and Domenic Friguglietto, from the ABC, would speak at the road show, Austrade said.

Austrade said companies such as Sydney-based company Bytegeist Software, which exported its specialist game and graphics technology to the UK, US and New Zealand, were good examples of local IT success overseas.

Austrade provides marketing advice, education and financial assistance to Australian companies through the Export Marketing Development Grant (EMDG) program.
