Aussie telco United Networks slashes prices by 50 percent

United Networks has cut its data prices and launched a white-label app for corporate customers.

The Sydney-headquartered telco said it had been able to discount its Global SIM product because its data costs have become significantly cheaper.

The price of its 1GB packs has fallen 50 percent, while 2GB packs are now available for less than 5.4 cents per megabyte. More countries have also been added to the packs.

United has also developed a wi-fi app, called Unlimited Data. This has been launched under its own name, but there is also a white-label version for corporate customers.

The app costs less than 50 cents per day and uses 57 million hotspots in more than 120 countries, according to United.

Selected partners have begun testing the app, with the commercial rollout expected to start next month.

Corporate partners can combine the two products to offer their clients a more cost-effective solution, according to United.

United chief executive Nicholas Ghattas said the telco had responded to the concerns that many travellers have about high and unknown data costs.

That, in turn, had made United’s offerings more valuable to white-label partners, he added.

“We can now offer unlimited wi-fi for $0.50 a day and a more cost-effective mobile data product than our competitors, with greater data availability in more countries, whilst reducing the cost of distribution,” he said.

“We expect the business effects for United to be higher volumes and take-up, while maintaining margins in offering cheaper and better products.”

United listed on the ASX last month. It has operations in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Malaysia and provides services in more than 190 countries.
