Apple to ditch YouTube app in iOS 6

Apple will remove the default YouTube application from its iPhone devices in the next iteration of its iOS operating system.

Apple confirmed iOS 6 will not include the application, as the license for the app has ended. iPhone users will be able to access YouTube via the Safari web browser.

YouTube owner Google is working on a dedicated YouTube application to be released in Apple's App Store.

The YouTube application will still be available in iOS 5.

The move is the second by Apple to distance itself from rival Google. Apple announced it would ditch the Google Maps service in iOS 6 in May this year, in favour of its own service, based on TomTom's mapping and sat-nav technology

The move was buoyed by Apple's purchase of mapping companies such as C3, Poly9 and Placebase.

Google confirmed Maps would return to iOS 6 as a standalone application.
