The Mac App Store will open its doors early next month, with Apple hoping the app model that has proved popular for iPhones will translate to full-blown computers.
Steve Jobs announced the apps for OS X computers concept back in October, but has stage-managed the launch to coincide with the opening day of the CES tech show on January 6.
Commentators have already suggested the launch date is timed to deflect attention from Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer's keynote address.
Apple has been recruiting developers for the scheme since October, and it will work on the same 70:30 revenue split as the store for iPhones and iPads, with developers left to set their own prices.
“The App Store revolutionised mobile apps,” said Jobs. “We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on 6 January.”
The store will be available to Mac users in 90 countries and be available initially for Mac OS X 10.6.
