PCNS can support an unlimited number of systems which can be increased if they are deployed on a virtual solution such as VMware ESX.
APC claims organisations such as banks, hospitals and universities rely on its network systems to store data including patient medical records but any sudden loss of power could put this data at risk.
“Imagine, for instance, a hospital losing power unexpectedly and not having access to all their vital patient information” said Gordon Makryllos, country general manager APC Pacific.
“If there’s a problem with power and the network goes down, there could be a severe business impact due to loss of key patient and medical data.”
The PCNS manages a shutdown of VMware ESX by sending a message to the Core Operating System. This alerts all guest Operating Systems that the host server is shutting down.
IT managers receive alerts via mobile phones (SMS), web applications (HTTP Post), and e-mail that the system is shutting down which gives them enough time to make sure all data is secure.
“When longer outages occur (more than a few minutes), the PowerChute Network Software’s graceful shutdown prevents loss of data, even if their data centre is unmanned or located remotely,” said Makryllos.
“The benefits this could have to businesses including banks and organisations such as hospitals and emergency services, is quite significant.”
APC is a Select Partner in VMware’s Technology Alliance Partner (TAP) Program.
