Data centre provider AirTrunk has opened its newest hyperscale data centre campus in Melbourne, just a few months after opening the first phase of its Sydney facility.
The new facility will have a 50-megawatt capacity across 20 data halls when it is fully completed, making it the largest carrier-neutral data centre in Victoria.
Comparatively, AirTrunk's Sydney facility will have 80 megawatts across 30 data halls in a 64,000 square metre campus upon completion.
It currently has a 5-megawatt capacity in its first phase, while the Sydney facility has an active capacity of 20 megawatts and will be adding as further 10 megawatts in mid-2018.
“Complementing our flagship facility in Sydney, AirTrunk Melbourne is the latest milestone in our expansion in the Asia-Pacific region, meeting the needs of customers in this market,” AirTrunk chief executive Robin Khuda said.
Khuda said the creation of the Melbourne facility was driven by a lack of hyperscale platforms able to support the rapid growth of cloud and content services in the region.
The new facility will have a 16,000 square metre data hall area, with another 7000 square metres for office and storage space.
A spokesperson from AirTrunk said construction lasted for 42 weeks, with an investment of "in excess of $100 million."
It currently employs 20 operational staff supporting the facility, and expects this number will grow over time as the upcoming phases go live.
Victorian minister for trade and investment Philip Dalidakis said AirTrunk’s investment in Western Melbourne would reinforce Victoria’s position as “a leading technology hub” in the Asia-Pacific region and drive employment within the state.
“This facility is a significant investment in our economy and we’re thrilled that AirTrunk has chosen to expand its operations in Western Melbourne,” Dalidakis said.
“With around 200 jobs during construction and more permanent roles when operational, this will have a positive impact on local employment.”
