Acronis stretches to become a platform play

Acronis has begun the process of becoming a platform player, by creating and exposing formal APIs.

As explained to CRN by president and co-founder Stas Protassov, “Our vision is simple. We have this cyber infrastructure which sits at the bottom, then we have APIs and on top of that we have services like backup, disaster recovery. search, e-discovery and security .”

Adding public APIs, he said, “gives us the ability to have a really robust platform together with our services.”

The APIs do so by making it possible for developers and service providers to create niche products. Protassov suggested a developer of specialist medical software, for example, could use the APIs to add search to its product.

“Right now they have to do it in a complicated way,” Protassov said. “They have to dig into the code and discover the [unofficial] APIs.” The likes of ConnectWise, Microsoft and Google have done so, with Acronis’ help.

Creating public APIs will make such integrations easier for more developers.

Protassov said partners asked for APIs some time ago, and that the company’s recent announcement of the interfaces is the result of efforts commenced “a couple of years ago”.

The APIs and accompanying software development kit will be formally launched at Acronis’ first ever partner summit in October 2019. They’re currently available under an early access program to which developers can apply here.
