Melbourne company Bombora Technologies, which operates Australia’s .com.au domain registry, has been acquired for $118.5 million by US domain registry Neustar.
Bombora Technologies started as Ausregistry in 1999 and is responsible for operating Australia’s .au internet registry database, which includes more than 3 million registered domains. Under its ARI Registry Services brand, it is responsible for the .sydney and .melbourne domains as well as more than 100 new top level domains.
Bombora grew revenue at a compounded annual rate of 12 percent to $28.2 million over the last two years. Its operating margins are between 25 and 30 percent.
In 2013, it also created a software development arm called Zoak Solutions, which last year won a seven-year contract with the Australian Communications & Media Authority to create and manage a new systems for allocating telephone numbers in Australia. The company also redesigned Australia’s registry for Renewable Energy Certificates.
Zoak has more than 90 staff in Melbourne and deploys and manages services on its own infrastructure or on Azure and AWS.
Its expertise includes Oracle, MySQL, Java 8 and Ruby, and it operates a 24x7 support team including Red Hat, Cisco and Juniper certified customer service staff.
Bombora will become part of Neustar’s US$963.6 million business, which pulled in US$163.7 million in net income in the 2014 financial year.
Tens of millions has been spent in Australia in the domain and hosting sector in the last couple of years, not least the $152.5 million sale of Melbourne IT’s Digital Brand Services business in 2013.
Melbourne IT made its own big domain-name business buyout when it spent $50.4 million to acquire Netregistry in February last year. It also spent $15.5 million buying Canberra hosting and domain registration business Uber Global in February this year.
