Meet the Toshiba Satellite C Series - the "value" laptop in Toshiba's range. And by cheap, we mean cheap. Prices start at $499 and go up to $699. Interestingly, it's possible to get this in a touchscreen model at this price.
Notice something about the touchpad? It's the buttons. Personally, we find dedicated "clickable" buttons awkward to use. We much prefer a single touchpad which can be "clicked" anywhere you land your finger. Then again we're spoilt: our home machine is a MacBook Pro and the touchpad is excellent. We also found the keyboard felt a bit flimsier, compared to the more expensive P, S and L Series.
This is the Toshiba Satellite P Series. This model is about "Prestige and Power" according to Toshiba's marketing material. Prices range from $1,299 to $1,999. It's possible to put a whopping 1TB hard drive in this machine.
The P Series keyboard. Note the "buttonless" touchpad - it's a lot nicer and larger than the touchpad on the C Series.
The P Series comes in touchscreen or non-touchscreen models. This is another P Series machine.
This is the Toshiba Satellite L Series. Price ranges from $599 to $999. With a "pearl white" option, this laptop stands out a mile, compared to the other Toshiba Satellite models.
The L Series has a backlit keyboard, unlike the Satellite P or C Series.
We included this closeup to show the design up close. There are some fine lines running through the design which you can't really make out in the other photo.
First impressions: the keyboard feels solid. Better than the C Series keyboard.
Curiously, we couldn't find a mention of hoe heavy this laptop is in information pack Toshiba gave us. Clearly this isn't a thin and light machine, but it would be nice to know.
This is the Toshiba Satellite S Series. "Sleek and Stylish" is the sales pitch. Toshiba's information states this laptop has the same "increased performance" as the L Series, but with a metallic finish. Price starts at $999.
The S Series keyboard is backlit, like the L Series, and unlike the P and C Series.
Like many other brands, Toshiba has a hybrid laptop which converts into a tablet. It's called the Toshiba Portege Z10t. One thing we like: the screen fully detaches when you want to carry it around as a tablet. With some other machines (Lenovo's Twist, for example) the screen never detaches, so the tablet is a lot heavier. Price starts at $1,199 with a Celeron CPU, or $1,499 with a Core i5 CPU.
The Z10t keyboard. It's a bit cramped compared to the other laptops in this gallery, but seems solid enough. The Z10t has a relatively small 11.6in screen.
The Z10t keyboard, detached.
The Z10t screen, being carried around as a tablet. It weighs 850g, compared to 662g for the heaviest iPad with Retina screen.
Yes, that's a Windows 8 Pro sticker. Unlike the Microsoft Surface RT, you should in theory be able to run regular desktop Windows applications on this tablet.
Finally, the Kira. This is Toshiba's new "luxury" model. The price starts at $1,799 and goes up to $2,199. Features include SSD, backlit keyboard and magnesium alloy. The lightest model of this 13 inch screen computer is 1.21Kg, which is lighter than a 13-inch MacBook Air.
