Three Queensland IT leaders share their stories.
Dan Pritchard, Delta Office Solutions
The business was started 25 years ago in Townsville, and over time there were several Delta stores. They’ve all been amalgamated into other businesses, except in Townsville and Mount Isa.
It began as a photocopier business dealing with Toshiba devices - we are still a Toshiba dealer and a Ricoh dealer. We brought in an IT fellow a couple of years ago and we’re building up that side of the company.
We partner with an international company called Continuum, who provide a help desk, a network operations centre and an RMM tool. We’re able to provide a 24/7 help desk in partnership with them, along with automated patching and whitelisting. The NOC will often fix faults that arise overnight before anyone even knows about them.
That sort of monitoring and proactive support is where we need to be. We aim to provide an all-in-one service that can be used to manage a company’s business technology; we also want to start growing into the conference room and media technology.

Bill Brown, Hi-Tech Solutions NQ
I’ve been working in the company for 43 years. I was originally into business equipment repairs, then went into computers in the Microbee and Amstrad days.
There are 12 of us in the company now, with several technicians. Our scale of work has grown to installations, LAN cabling and telephone systems, right up to server installations and CCTV.
I put all my boys through certified web-based training, and we are certified with all of the major companies.
We are now going into robotics. That is going to be the future for young people, and we have made CDs to distribute around schools because that is part of the curriculum now.
We also do BYOD for the schools, and I sponsor the awards nights for most of them, as well as maths, science and IT.
I joined Leading Edge Computers Australia, and I’m on the steering committee for that. We have purchasing power, and with the talent and knowledge in the organisation, we can deal and compete with larger companies.

We have been doing this for the last six years. We started with basic things such as computer repairs, and eventually we started working for businesses providing IT support and setting up from scratch, and then website design and software development.
We mainly look after small and medium businesses.
Townsville is a small town so opportunities are limited, but we can work up to 200 kilometres out and have business clients in nearby towns. We’re getting new customers and providing them cloud services like Office 365 and cloud backup.
We do a lot of work in the dental and medical field. We started with one dentist, and over time we learned what programs and technology they use - it was the same with medical centres - so now, we’re confident that we can set up a new centre.
