With chief executive Allan Aitchison.
What network product and services do you specialise in?
MIMP specialises in microwave wireless networks, including for private medical services integrating clinics to public agencies and local governments. Vendors include Commscope, Aviat, NEC and Totem-WiFi.
When did your company first get involved in this area?
MIMP was founded in 1985 in the early days of cabled networking. We got involved in wireless networking in the 1990s and microwave in the 2000s. At each stage we have pushed what’s possible with well-designed deployments of off-the-shelf networking kit.
What are your networking credentials?
MIMP delivers turnkey microwave projects for our customers. After receiving Cisco accreditation, we got a licence to build microwave towers. As well as our own rigging groups for building microwave networks, we have accredited satellite engineers and RF (radio frequency) engineers.
Heard about any cool networking developments recently?
A really cool development is that affordable microwave gear lets us leverage commercial infrastructure to deliver community benefits. For example, after we deployed a microwave network for a mine in the Flinders Ranges, MIMP extended it at our own expense to deliver high-speed comms to the Arkaroola settlement.
Can you tell us about a recent networking deployment?
MIMP established a 100Mbps microwave wireless connection from Adelaide to Kangaroo Island, which previously had limited ADSL and 3G mobile broadband. The NEC microwave radio network carries 300Mbps of data, easily upgradeable to 850Mbps.
What is driving customers’ networking projects?
First, companies want improved performance, so their primary driver is reliable services. Once that box is ticked they all look to lower operational costs, which is the beauty of microwave networks. After the initial capex cost, operating costs are much lower than legacy communication services.
Networking is...?
Networking is to business as water is to life.
