Optus first in Australia to sell Blackberry Android phone

Optus will be the first to sell Blackberry’s first Android smartphone, the Blackberry Priv.

The smartphone will be available to buy outright or on a range of post-paid plans but, despite this week's release, local pricing has not been announced. In North America, the Blackberry Priv is priced at US$699 outright.

The device is fitted with 2560x1440 resolution curved screen measuring at 5.4 inches. The Priv also comes with a throwback to smartphones of the past - a physical slideout keyboard.

The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 32GB storage and support for micro SD cards up to 2TB.

The Priv has access to an array of Android apps from Google’s Play Store while maintaining security features that first popularised Blackberry.

The device’s keys have been embedded to verify each layer from hardware, OS and applications. It also comes with a feature that alerts users every time any app attempts to access data, or turn on the phone's microphone or camera.

Blackberry has struggled in recent years, with its market share for smartphones falling to less than one percent.
