Telstra has revealed it will begin trialing its public wi-fi access points at 1,000 locations in November.
The locations – including major cities, regional locations and tourist hotspots – will go live before Christmas, ahead of the official launch next year.
The initial locations include Bondi Beach, Bourke Street Mall in Melbourne as well as the Perth CBD.
Telstra plans to eventually roll out two million W-Fi hotspots over a five-year period. While the trial includes major cities, regional locations will form a “major part” of the network.
The initial locations include payphone sites “at the heart of local communities” and in “areas people want to connect”. Later, Telstra will setup hotspots at Telstra retail outlets and exchange buildings.

- Bourke Street Mall, Melbourne
- Bondi Beach, Sydney
- Rundle Mall, Adelaide
- Queen Street Mall, Brisbane
- Elizabeth Street, Hobart
- Civic Centre, Canberra
- Perth CBD
- Smith Street Mall, Darwin
- Plus key regional locations and holiday destinations
Telstra is not the only provider rolling out free wi-fi hotspots. Earlier this year iiNet revealed plans for 700 access points to be rolled out in Canberra. iiNet had also previously rolled out free wi-fi in Perth, while Internode had also previously rolled out free wi-fi in Adelaide.
