The other Southern Cross quietly wins millions in govt work

Southern Cross Computing was awarded more than 40 federal government contracts totalling more than $13 million in records published in the three months from May to the end of July this year.

The company, which started in 1986, is content to fly under the radar for its government work. A slogan it uses is "quietly achieving for 20 years" - the company even uses a picture of the famous Easter Island statues on its site.

But the quiet achiever is racking up the wins. This includes a $3.4 million amendment to an SAP contract it has with the Department of Defence.

Unlike regular IT support contracts, the two-year agreement will see the Canberra business supply "information management" and administration for Defence rather than technical support.

Defence has approximately 3,000 SAP users, with Southern Cross Computing already supporting financial information stored in SAP EEC6 and SAP BW Netweaver 7.3.

Southern Cross Computing currently has four other contracts with the Department of Defence, according to a Defence spokesperson.

Much of the federal government work is for ICT contractors, software testing and implementation.

In less than a month since details of the $3.4 million contract were published online on 8 July, another $4.2 million of work, across 13 contracts, has also been awarded to Southern Cross Computing.

Managing director Paul McDonald was coy about the wins when contacted by CRN, not wanting to go into detail on the SAP contract with Defence.

The company claims that over half the SAP sites in Canberra use its services and that it is the only SAP Services Partner specialising in support to federal government.

"You name them, we service them. We've got 30 different clients we deliver services to," McDonald said.

Southern Cross Computing is not related to Melbourne-based Southern Cross Computer Systems.
