Data#3 clinches $19m Microsoft win for Defence

Data#3 has won a $19.1 million contract to supply Microsoft software to be used in support of major IT projects by the Australian Department of Defence.

The software will be predominantly used in support of the Defence Single Information Environment program, a key plank in Defence's plan to "radically reform" ICT delivery.

The software includes "various Windows Server components" as well as SQL Server, which were to be delivered during the contract period which ended 30 June.

Defence contracts directly with Data#3 for all Microsoft software procurement activities, according to a department spokesperson. Data#3 is the nominated Large Account Reseller under the Microsoft Volume Sourcing Arrangement. Data#3 declined to comment on the contract.

The win follows a $1.9 million server rollout by Data#3 for Defence earlier this year.

The Defence SIE is part of a major series of IT projects that includes a $1.9 billion infrastructure transformation program. This will see a dramatic reduction in the number of data centres and server sites over the next few years, as sister publication iTnews reported earlier this year.

Defence also has a $28 million contract with NetApp to supply equipment including storage and networking for its Next Generation Desktop project. Defence is migrating 100,000 users to Windows 7 thin clients and has plans to deploy unified communications and a high speed communications network.
