Technology giant Huawei has extended its jersey sponsorship of the Canberra Raiders NRL team for 2015, as it continues its expansion in the Australian market.

The international vendor said that while its sports portfolio now includes big names like Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, the Spanish La Liga and Royal Challengers Bangalore of the IPL, the Raiders were its first sponsorship deal.

"The Raiders sponsorship was the first professional sporting partnership that the company entered into globally," said John Lord, chairman of Huawei Australia.

A statement from Huawei said that the company was "delighted" to extend the Raiders deal for an extra year and the co-operation has included philanthropic activities like raising funds for cancer research, technology for grassroots rugby league volunteers and indigenous engagement programs.

Canberra Raiders CEO Don Furner said: "The international profile Huawei brings to the Raiders is invaluable and their commitment and loyalty to the Raiders has been outstanding."

In the last week, Huawei released the Ascend G6 "Selfie King" phone to the Australian market through Optus and Vodafone, while the Raiders wore a special golden jersey to commemorate the event.

Last month, CRN reported the Australian arm of the Chinese vendor racked up over $400 million of revenue in a financial year that included the US$20 million purchase of an Australian software firm.
