Aussie wireless firm sold for $1.2m

Sydney-based wireless communications provider BigAir has continued its buying spree, forking out $1.2 million to purchase telco engineering services company Star-Tech.

"We expect Star-Tech to provide a significant boost to BigAir's high speed fixed wireless infrastructure construction and maintenance capability as well as adding to our Community Broadband WiFi and enterprise 'WiFi-as-a-Service' capabilities," said BigAir CEO, Jason Ashton.

In February, BigAir announced in half-yearly results that more than half of its revenues came from acquisitions since 2011, rather than core business. In that time BigAir has taken over AccessPlus, Clever Communications Australia, Allegro Networks, Link Innovations, Intelligent IP Communications and Anittel's carrier operations.

The $1.2 million purchase price for Star-Tech consists entirely of shares and the acquisition is expected to complete at the end of the month, according to BigAir's statement to the ASX. Star-Tech will become a wholly-owned subsidiary.

In 2010, BigAir bought the managed ISP operations of Star-Tech, according to the statement. BigAir's student accommodation WiFi product, "Community Broadband", came out of that acquisition.

Ashton said that Star-Tech's remaining engineering services team has "experience at heritage listed sites" and "in-house engineers and project managers that design, engineer commission and maintain" solutions.

Star-Tech is also based in Sydney and was established in 1990. According to the company, in 1993 it was the first in the world to install an "unlicensed WAN link... using digital microwave radio in the 2.4GHz band", for the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.
