Microsoft has acknowledged that a recent of security updates is causing trouble for PCs running popular security software.
The batch included the usual mix of essentials – security enhancements to Windows storage – and oddities – Spectre and Meltdown fixes for VIA processors, which never won more than one or two percent market share.
But it also included “… an issue on devices with Sophos Endpoint Protection installed and managed by either Sophos Central or Sophos Enterprise Console (SEC) that may cause the system to become unresponsive upon restart after installing this update.”
A similar problem hit users of Avast for Business, Avast CloudCare, and AVG Business Edition antivirus software, which “may become unresponsive at the login or Welcome screen” and may leave users “unable to log in or log in after an extended period of time.”
Similar issues hit users of Avira and Arcabit antivirus software.
Avast has fixed the problem, issuing updates to its software that fix the problem.
Microsoft’s fix is to stop distributing the updates to users who run Sophos and Avira software. But there’s no news for ArcaBit users – the company and Microsoft are talking.
This is not the first time Windows Updates have broken security software, which may be one reason Microsoft last week changed the way major Windows 10 updates are delivered to give users more time before they become compulsory.
