Windows 9 Technical Preview launch date confirmed

Microsoft will unveil Windows 9 to the press on 30 September.

Invites have been sent to members of the media for the San Francisco event, in which Windows chief Terry Myerson will set out the new direction for Microsoft's troubled OS.

The company is expected to make a Technical Preview of Windows 9 available on the day, which will likely be restricted to the press and developers, before a full public beta either later this year or early next.

A series of leaked videos of the Windows 9 code have emerged this week, showing some of the new features that Microsoft will likely highlight in a fortnight's time. These include a revamped Start menu, as well as multiple virtual desktops and a new notification centre.

Interestingly, all of the features that have leaked to date have concerned the traditional Windows desktop, whilst the Microsoft invite says the press will find out "what's next for Windows and the enterprise", suggesting that Microsoft is refocusing on the traditional PC/laptop use cases, rather than the touchscreen devices that were the primary focus for Windows 8.

While Microsoft certainly won't throw in the towel on tablet devices, it seems the company is looking to shore up its PC heartland with new features focused specially on the desktop.
