Windows 8 tablets to beat iPad 3 in resolution

Microsoft has revealed its Windows 8 operating system will support 10.1 screens at a 2560x1440,  resolution, beating Apple's 264ppi retina display.

In a Windows engineering blog, program manager David Washington said the operating system had been designed to grow with improving display technology.

"There’s a ton of innovation in the world of displays—from pixel density, to aspect ratio, to core technologies," he wrote. "Our goal is to support the broadest range of display technologies so PC makers can build PCs or you can use external displays that provide the best experience for your needs."

No manufacturers have yet announced they will sell tablets carrying the 2560x1440 resolution.
