What's going on with HP's TouchPad?

None of the second batch of HP TouchPads flagged to meet high consumer demand in the wake of retail fire sales will make it to Australia, the company said, although it was yet to reveal how many additional units would be produced.

The statement comes less than two weeks after Australian retail giant Harvey Norman said it would urge HP to resurrect the device after it sold more than 6,000 units in a day. The response of consumers in the US, Britain and Canada was similarly dramatic.

A spokesman for HP Australia said that the second batch of TouchPads was aimed at meeting unfulfilled demand in the US. But it remained to be seen whther additional units might be sold through channels in other locations,

"With regard to the HP TouchPads, although we announced an end to manufacturing webOS hardware, we have decided to produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand in the US," the spokesman said  "The number of TouchPad units to be made is not immediately [known]. In Australia I can confirm we have sold out all retail inventory and will not be selling anymore additional HP TouchPads via this channel."

However, Australian consumers keen to buy a TouchPad would likely be able to via US etailers, as occured during the first fire sale of the devices last month.

The spokesman said HP would continue to support customers who had already purchased a TouchPad. "HP is fully committed to the ongoing support and service of customers who purchased webOS devices and will honour our product warranties. We expect that HP TouchPad owners can look forward to an over-the-air update that will enhance the platform and add functionality and a growing applications catalog."
