WARP Systems signs fresh mobile deal

Specialist mobile data terminal distributor WARP Systems has cut a distribution agreement with new Australian market entrant Mobile Data Technology (MDT) to distribute the company's Pendulum software product.

Pendulum - created in the UK by MDT - lets resellers and end users create mobile data applications for Pocket PC devices.

Paul Shepherd, product marketing manager at WARP, said the software would enhance options open to resellers looking to crack the mobile data market. 'Until now, creating serious business process-based mobile data applications almost invariably required custom software to be developed.

'Not only did resellers have to deploy expensive programming resources to create these applications, but for the end user the cost of custom software often outweighed the cost of the hardware and made the whole thing a non-starter, especially where relatively small numbers of terminals were required,' he said.

Pendulum plugs the gap by enabling resellers to offer a packaged software product and let the buyer create their own application or use Pendulum in-house to create cost-effective mobile applications for the customer, he claimed.

John Burkett, MD at MDT, said WARP would be the company's principal trade distributor for the 'industrial terminal end of the market.'

However, he wants the software supplied via other 'more general' distribution channels alongside Pocket PC-based PDAs. 'Pendulum offers great opportunities for resellers in the more PDA-oriented end of the market as well and we are currently talking to a few distributors who fit that type of profile, but are a little way off being able to announce anything yet,' he said.

WARP is also the master distributor for Symbol Technologies in Australia. MDT is based in Brisbane, QLD.
