EDS will deploy VMware Infrastructure 3 (VI3) on systems and software from Sun Microsystems, to help reduce AAPT’s server numbers from 300 to 13, said David Yuile, AAPT GM Networks and Technology. The service provider will also maintain and support the new virtual infrastructure for AAPT.
Yuile claimed using VMware will cut hardware costs substantially and reduce the environmental impact of its datacenter through server consolidation.
“AAPT’s decision to invest in virtualisation was driven by the need to upgrade its ageing server line-up and reduce its carbon footprint by using less power,” he said.
The VMWare Infrastructure 3 (V13) will run on Sun Fire X4600 M2 servers, each with 8X CPU’s and Sun Fire X4200 servers each with 2XCPU’s, said Yuile. “We see virtualisation as a core component of our IT strategy.”
This is one of the first major agreement signed in the Australia-Pacific region following VMware's OEM deal with Sun Microsystems, member of EDS Agility Alliance, claimed Paul Harapin, managing director, Australia and New Zealand, VMware.
“The savings, coupled with the positive environmental impact virtualisation provides, helped fuel the growing adoption rate of virtualisation in Australia and New Zealand.”
