Thomas Duryea Logicalis brings IT to order for law firm Maddocks

Top 20 Australian law firm Maddocks prides itself on values like collaboration, change and innovation, but its previous IT infrastructure didn't quite live up to these values.

Signs that the company's previous IT refresh had reached end-of-life included desktop computers running older versions of Windows, an on-premises data centre and servers in each office instead of being centralised in company headquarters. 

Maddocks had a vision to transform its workspace, to bring in new technologies and to empower its staff with mobility.

The law firm sent its business outcomes to potential IT suppliers asking for a roadmap toward a modern office. Thomas Duryea Logicalis emerged as the ideal partner. 

TDL's solution integrated many modern technologies, including: migration to infrastructure as a service on the TDL cloud; disaster recovery as a service with Zerto VM replication, Microsoft Windows 10 and Office 365; Lenovo Ultrabooks; Dell Aruba Wireless networking; Dell site infrastructure; TDL and Comscentre WAN connectivity; Dell Secureworks; Always On via MS Direct Access; virtualisation with Citrix; and integration elements with Service Now.

Scott Earle, Victorian state sales manager for connectivity provider Comscentre, said the project brought together complementing technologies.

“Telecommunications data aggregator Comscentre designed a full meshed MPLS network, aggregating several tier 1 carriers to provide a fully managed WAN, which was designed to provide Maddocks with scalable options as they adopted cloud-based IT services and as their user base became a more mobile workforce,” he said.  

“The new network comprises of dark fibre services, traditional fibre and ethernet options, giving Maddocks diversity with their last mile coverage and no single point of failure on any of the data services.”

Tying it all together required 11 simultaneous streams of work, in addition to collaboration between vendors, Maddocks stakeholders and external consultants. The whole team worked together to identify and resolve all of the issues impacting the end-user experience.

Now, lawyers at Maddocks are able to work more efficiently, without unnecessary IT overhead, less time is spent in administrative tasks collaboration and communication has increased, improved connectivity and communication through Skype for Business and office 365 has seen communication flourish, and staff can now work from anywhere, enabling greater productivity.

The project was right on time, a critical factor for the Maddocks team shifting to a new office in Docklands, Melbourne on 4 September.
