Telstra to launch second Android phone on May 4

Telstra will launch the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 smartphone - its second Android mobile - on 4 May just one week after it debuts its first Android phone the HTC Desire.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 features a large four-inch touch screen display and an 8.1 megapixel auto focus camera with 16x digital zoom, smile detection and face recognition.

Telstra has described the smartphone as a "sophisticated phone with distinctive styling".

Ross Fielding, Telstra's executive director of Mobility Products said the "piano black finish" and "metal highlights make it one of the most distinctive looking smartphones available".

"Add to this a fast 1GHz processor to power rich phone graphics, video playback and multitasking plus a connection to Australia's largest and fastest 3G network and you have an appealing package," he said.

Fielding said customers will also have access to thousands of free and paid-for applications available from the Android market - including games, transport apps, productivity tools, fitness apps and news services

"Two apps unique to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 allow customers to view all of their communication or media in one screen.

"Timescape displays all of a customer's communication in one view including SMS, email, Facebook posts and tweets making it easier to keep up to date.

"Mediascape allows customers to browse and access media content saved on their phone or available online - for instance on YouTube," said Fielding.

Last month, Telstra announced that the Android-powered HTC Desire smartphone will be available on the telco's Next G network exclusively from 27 April.

CRN understands the Xperia X10 is not exclusive to Telstra.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will be available for $0 upfront on Telstra's $110 Ultimate plan, which includes 150MB of data each month, for 24 months (minimum total price $2640) and $0 upfront on the $99 cap plan for 24 months (minimum total price $2376).

It can also be purchased outright for a RRP of $1099.

Available from [T]life, Telstra stores and dealers from 4 May.
