The man who almost downloaded the entire internet during Telstra’s recent free data day has been given an opportunity to test new networking technology by the telco.
Szaszvari made headlines after downloading nearly a terabyte of data during Telstra's free data day on 3 April. The deal was an apology for the second nationwide service outage that took down Telstra's network for several hours on 17 March.
A Telstra spokesperson told news.com.au that Szaszvari, who is a network engineer, had been recruited to test new ultra-fast wireless technology.
“We’ve invited him to help us test our upcoming 1Gbps mobile broadband hotspot before we make it available to our customers,” the spokesperson said.
“The device will be the first of its kind in the world and should be capable of speeds around three times faster than his current phone.”
Szaszvari said he was excited by the new technology, despite previously voicing criticism of Telstra’s service.
“Quite frankly, it sounds absolutely amazing. If they can pull off what they’re developing, I feel a bit odd saying this, but I feel it would change or impact the NBN debate quite significantly,” he said.
“The technology they’re talking about is very, very new, basically they’d be the first company in the entire world to do something with it.”
ABC has reported that Szaszvari used the recent free data day to download every episode of The Simpsons and Mythbusters as well as the Wikipedia database.
Telstra said its customers downloaded a record 2,686 terabytes of data on the day – 46 percent more than the amount downloaded on the last free data day, in February.
“Customers took the opportunity to stream and download movies, binge-watch TV shows, run computer updates and install software, and compete in gaming marathons around the world, for free,” according to Telstra.
