NBN to upgrade remaining 600,000 fibre-to-the-node premises to full fibre by 2030

The federal government has announced an equity injection of up to $3 billion to upgrade the remaining 600,000-odd premises still on fibre-to-the-node connections to full fibre, with the program to be complete by December 2030.

NBN Co will also contribute more than $800 million to the effort.

The government said more than 99 per cent of premises currently on the copper-based fibre-to-the-node network will receive the upgrade - exceeding its earlier 2025 commitment to reach more than 95 per cent of those premises.

More than half the premises in scope are in regional areas.

Once complete, the government said more than 11 million homes and businesses across Australia will be able to access multi-gigabit-capable broadband. The announcement follows the completion of a separate 1.5 million-premises fibre upgrade program in December 2025.

NBN Co said it had identified efficiencies and savings during design and construction of that earlier program, making the broader rollout financially viable within the stated envelope.
