Telstra claims 70k iPads on Next G network

Telstra has revealed that about 70,000 iPad customers are connected to its Next G mobile network.

Chief executive David Thodey said that there were “not as many [Samsung] Galaxy” tablets in use on the network as Apple iPads.

Average revenue per user (ARPU) from tablet owners was “nowhere near” what Telstra got from smartphone users.

“It’s in the low numbers,” Thodey said.

He said that the ability for customers to switch over from 3G networks to WiFi meant that revenues from tablet users were not as high as customers on straight 3G connections.

Thodey also said today that Telstra put 400,000 new iPhones and 290,000 Android smartphones on its network in the first half.

Telstra also announced today that almost a quarter of its mobile customer base were now using smartphone devices.

Thodey said he believed the carrier previously wasn't as strong in the smartphone market "as where we needed to be".

In the first half of the financial year, Telstra added 919,000 mobile customers, including 505,000 wireless broadband subscribers.

Telstra recorded a 36 percent drop in net profit after tax for the first half of the financial year, it reported today.

The telco reported a decline in sales revenue of $60 million to $12.2 billion and earnings before interest, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) down 13.9 percent to $4.58 billion.

Net profit after tax also fell 36 percent to $1.2 billion, the carrier reported.
