Barely a day after Microsoft revealed which of its OEM partners would jump on board with Windows RT devices in October, the price of Microsoft's own Surface RT device has been leaked.
Not only will the tablet/laptop hybrid be slimmer and lighter than the iPad, as Microsoft yesterday revealed, it will also be cheaper - coming in at $US199, according to Engadget.
The price point places Surface RT in direct competition with the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire, at the lower end of the market.
The price conflicts with an earlier reported price point of $A977 - a cost revealed in late July after a Swedish retailer posted a price list on its website.
According to Swedish online retailer webhallen.com, Microsoft's 32GB Windows RT model will retail for around $A977 - a lower price point than the comparable laptop/tablet hybrid Asus Transformer Pad Infinity ($A999). The top end 128GB Windows 8 hybrid device appeared to be set to retail for around $A2097.
Microsoft is yet to comment on the price of its upcoming devices.
The tablet will launch alongside Windows 8 on October 26. It is expected to include a 10.6in screen at 1366x768 resolution and Tegra 3 quad-core chip, with an attachable keyboard/case.
Microsoft yesterday announced Dell, Lenovo and Samsung will join the ranks of Windows RT vendors launching ARM-based Windows 8 products this year.
The trio's devices will join the likes of Acer and its 600 tablet, Toshiba’s planned notebook and tablet devices, as well as Microsoft’s own Surface offering.
