Supermarket launches Google Glass app

Have you ever been doing your online shopping and thought "this would be so much better with smartglasses?" If so, Tesco has some good news for you.

The company has made good on its promise to release a Google Glass app that enables shoppers to add items to their online basket without having to reach for their phone or computer.

With Tesco Groceries glasswear, Glass wearers can use the app to search for items either by using voice search, eg "OK Glass, find juice", or by scanning barcodes of items that they already have in their kitchen using the command "OK Glass, scan a product".

As well as adding items to their basket, users can also view nutritional information and, as would be expected, pricing information.

According to Tesco, the app can also notify them of when a delivery is arriving and send them a picture of the driver who will shortly be arriving at their door.

When the app was first announced in June last year, Tesco developer Pablo Coberly admitted it's unlikely anyone would do their entire online shop using a set of smartglasses. However, he suggested shoppers "might just add a single item, see some nutritional information, and then move on".

Tesco Groceries glasswear isn't a standalone app, though - users will still need to have Tesco's grocery apps on either their iOS or Android device in order to manage their basket and check out.

However, Coberly is very enthusiastic about the new app, saying: "I can't help but feel this is still the beginning of the journey for Glass and for Tesco."

If you're a Google Glass owner and want to give the app a whirl, Tesco Groceries glasswear can be downloaded here.
