Staples chief steps down
Ron Sargent

Staples has announced that global chief executive Ron Sargent will step down from his role.

Sargent will exit after the annual meeting of shareholders on 14 June, with North America operations president Shira Goodman to fill in in the interim.

Sargent has been with the company for 27 years and will continue as non-executive chairman until January 2017. The search for the new chief executive will consider both internal and external candidates.

"Staples Australia has a solid leadership with our own local president and vice president. I feel like this change will not affect us," Head of Staples Australia technology solutions Karl Sice told CRN.

He said the announcement was not a surprise as there had been a discussions for some time.

Sice said that the change was put on hold because of the proposed takeover of Office Depot OfficeMax that fell through in May after a court ruling. Staples had to pay a US$250 million termination fee as a result.
