The Victorian state government has awarded Melbourne telco Spirit Networks a contract to build broadband services in the regional town of Morwell.
The $1.1 million contract involves Spirit’s fixed wireless product, Sky Speed, with towers to be built across the town.
“After a thorough tender process, Spirit is thrilled to be delivering its super-fast internet in the region,” Spirit said in a statement.
“The deal will enable the rural community and businesses in Morwell with a population in excess of 13,000, to have the same access to internet services as metropolitan, interstate and international counterparts.”
The telco said the network uses beam-forming technology, one of the technologies used in the global 5G standard. Each tower will cover a 10km radius, and may be able to provide services to neighbouring towns Traralgon and Moe.
The contract follows a previous $1.7 million deal to build a fixed wireless network in regional city Horsham.
“We believe our offering is market leading and will put to bed the mindset that 5G technology is purely a mobile play,” managing director Geoff Neate said.
“We are looking forward to strengthening the Morwell community’s access to super-fast internet.”
