Sony S Tablet hits Australian stores today

The Sony Tablet S is due to hit stores in Australia from today, the company has announced.

The Tablet S is Sony's first attempt at a consumer-level tablet. It comes with a Tegra 2 CPU, WiFi, a 9.4in screen, DLNA-certification, an SD card slot, 5MP camera and weighs 598g. Sony is claiming an eight hour battery life.

One of the Sony Tablet S' biggest selling points is its PlayStation Store download service, which grants access to classic PSOne games such as Crash Bandicoot. We got a brief hands on play with the Tablet S earlier last month and it seemed to perform reasonably well as a gaming device. (You can read our first impressions here.)

Sony has stated it intends to become the "number two" tablet manufacturer in the Australian market by 2012. This isn't exactly an ambitious aim, if we're being honest, especially since the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 remains barred from sale in Australia.

The Sony Tablet S will be available to purchase from tomorrow at www.sony.com.au, Sony Centre stores and "selected retailers". It will come in two versions: a 16GB model for $579 and a 32GB model for $689.
