SolarWinds sounds out channel for server plans

Network management specialist SolarWinds has set up an Australian office and was in "data-gathering" mode to establish a channel program, said it's freshly anointed general manager.

SolarWinds was best known for network management software, although it had expanded into server management and storage.

"The networking guys' jobs started changing," said APAC general manager Doug Hibberd (pictured). "As they started to get broader [responsibilities] we looked at how we could broaden our solution."

SolarWinds said it aimed to make its server management software business equal its $US150 million networking management software sales within four years.

The server management category included cloud, virtualisation and web management; SolarWinds' application could measure response times and latency for cloud-based applications. Competitors were VMware, Novell, vKernel and Veeam.

Hibberd said more than half of the vendor's sales were through the channel. He said the decision to open an office in Australia was partly to get closer to channel partners.

In November, it opened a Brisbane office where Hibberd, who was also senior vice president of engineering, was based.

"We think we have a very different way of selling software," Hibberd said.

"The amount of work they have to do is much less. You don't have to educate the customer as much. It's a very easy product to sell, the sales cycle is short.

"We want to hear from you what kind of programs we can work on, case studies and tools."

SolarWinds will hold a channel event in Sydney in April.
