AI-powered, enterprise-grade modern work management platform Smartsheet has launched a dedicated Australian hosting region for its work management platform to address demand from local organisations requiring data sovereignty compliance.
The new infrastructure is Smartsheet's fourth regional deployment globally, with primary hosting in Sydney and backup systems located in Melbourne.
All customer and partner data will remain within Australian borders to support compliance with local privacy legislation including the Australian Privacy Act and international frameworks such as the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
"This investment in a new Smartsheet Regions Australia underscores our dedication to the APJ region and the local data residency needs of our Australian and APJ customers," Helen Masters, the company's managing director for Asia-Pacific and Japan said.
"This Australia-hosted instance of Smartsheet will support both new and existing customers and partners, giving users access to work management technology so they comply with regional privacy and governance requirements, such as the Australian Privacy Act."
The launch targets organisations in regulated industries that face restrictions on offshore data storage.
Smartsheet already supports multiple compliance frameworks including ISO standards, and United States ones such as FedRAMP, HIPAA, and Department of Defence Impact Level 4.
The company said it is pursuing certification under the Information Security Registered Assessors Program (IRAP) for the Asia-Pacific region.
"This development allows us to expand our services to clients with stringent regulatory requirements, ensuring their data remains securely onshore," Jason Frost, the general manager for data and integration at Atturra, said.
"Our APJ customers can now access work management technology while supporting compliance with local regulations."
Smartsheet said it has enjoyed rapid regional growth since its arrival in Australia.
"We opened our first APJ office in Sydney five years ago, and since then we’ve seen more than 260 per cent customer growth in Australia and New Zealand, with nearly 250 per cent growth across APJ," Masters said.
"To help us build on this strong foundation, we have welcomed nearly 100 partners across 20 countries to the Smartsheet Aligned ecosystem, and have recently opened an office in Japan."
