Panasonic enters the third dimension

Despite a lack of content, the 3D television hype train shows no sign of slowing. Panasonic is the latest company to unveil 3D enabled gear, announcing details of the Australian launch of its televisions and 3D Blu-ray player.

Panasonic has chosen to go with Plasma rather than LCD for its 3D solutions, and its 3D Neo-Plasma television is set to cost $3299 and will come with one set of glasses and two DVD titles. It's 3D Blu-ray player, said to work with 'compatible 3D TVs', will launch in June and cost $599.

This makes Panasonic the third big player to announce its 3D TV products, joining Samsung and Sony. Of these only Samsung has models on the market, having hit stores last weekend. Sony is set to release its models in July.

Panasonic's announcement comes despite a rather profound lack of 3D content. Early adopters should expect to get really sick of watching a handful of CGI movies, because it doesn't look like 3D Blu-Ray discs will be available through retail channels for quite some time.

At the moment the only way to get your hands on 3D Blu-ray content is via a Samsung bundle deal. It has exclusive rights to Monsters vs Aliens 3D, which is the only 3D Blu-ray title currently in existence. Samsung has also secured exclusive rights to a 3D Blu-ray release of Shrek, which is set to appear in its bundles later this year.

Sony is rumoured to be bundling the 3D Blu-ray version of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, plus there will be a PlayStation 3 update that enables 3D technology (and 4 downloadable 3D games will go on sale).
