A major fibre outage is affecting internet users in Darwin, Northern Territory, with reports that several carriers have been affected by a damaged cable.
CRN understands an incident involving a truck about 15km from Katherine is to blame for damage to a Nextgen fibre cable on the outskirts of Darwin, leaving many users across the city, whose retail providers rely on the infrastructure, without internet access for several hours. It is understood carriers including iiNet, Internode, TPG, AAPT, Commander and other providers are affected.
An iiNet incident report lists a major fault as the result of a fibre break for the areas of Darwin and Regional Northern Territory as having begun 18 hours ago. TPG and Internode also confirmed the disruption on their support pages.
NBNCo leases part of its network from Nextgen, but has a redundancy service if the fibre is disrupted.
Nextgen parent Vocus Communications reported it became aware of the damage as soon as it happened and set about working to restore services.
"Unfortunately, restoration overnight was not possible as the vehicle which had damaged the cable could not be removed due to conditions at the site. We proceeded with an alternate plan for restoration this morning and expect this to be complete in the early afternoon," a spokesperson said.
According to a report from ABC, customers of Optus, iiNet TPG and Internode began complaining about outages just after 5pm yesterday.
