Data centre and cloud services provider iSeek Communications has announced that it will build a new, cyclone-rated data centre in Townsville in partnership with Optus and Schneider Electric.
The North Queensland Regional Data Centre, set to be a tier-3 facility, will initially host infrastructure from Townsville City Council and James Cook University. Those two anchor tenants collaborated in 2016 to source a provider to build the data centre.
The data centre will be built to a category 5 cyclone rating and provide a secure environment for critical infrastructure for local and state government, government agencies, enterprises and local businesses operating in North Queensland, according to iSeek.
iSeek chief executive Jason Gomersall said the colocation provider was excited to be working with Optus and Schneider Electric.
“Townsville City Council has ambitious plans for growth and regional development in North Queensland, with James Cook University’s requirements for increased cloud storage facilities being a primary driver for their collaboration in getting this project underway,” he said.
“Additionally, the NQRDC is a boost to regional infrastructure, will help attract future business investment and promote more job opportunities,”
The data centre is scheduled for a 2019 completion, aligning with when the facility currently servicing the area reaches end-of-life.
