Opinion: Hard spin
Well, if you’re after absolute performance then he has a point to make, but how many of us are after every last drop of speed for every transaction? By the Fujitsu criteria we should all be driving Ferraris just in case we need a sudden extra turn of speed on the highway. Never mind what that would do to the dwindling energy resources of the planet. What, me exaggerate?

Solid state drives might not save a lot of power but they do use less than spinning disks. And every bit counts. Does every nanosecond really matter? Maybe it matters if you’re using those ever-so-slightly-faster hard disks to figure out how to build a sustainable energy source before the sticky black stuff runs out. Or the coal-fired power stations cook the planet enough to swamp themselves in their own rising tides.

If not, then why not help rather than hinder efforts to reduce power consumption wherever and whenever we can. And a solid-state drive makes more than just power-saving sense. It makes non-crashing heads sense. It makes less noise sense. It makes less heat sense.

Damn it, it just makes good sense. Sometimes new technology does just make good sense. And when it does, it’s time to embrace it, rather than quibble about whether it’s quite the answer to every prayer.

Besides, if every vendor doesn’t get behind solid-state drives how are they going to get manufactured in high enough volumes for me to be able to afford one in my notebook? See, they even make economic sense. Or they will if Mr Fujitsu stops picking on the poor little non-spinning over-priced suckers.
