The Opera Mini 6 and Opera Mobile 11 browsers were launched today, with tablet compatibility and a host of new features.
The main - and possibly the only - difference between the smartphone and tablet versions was the interface.
With the tablet versions, the browser appeared more like a standard PC version, with a tab at the top. The smartphone editions include the tab at the bottom.
Opera Mini differs from Mobile in that it uses Opera’s servers to reduce webpages down to a tenth of their original size.
The Mobile version is a full browser, providing modern functionality - such as HTML5 support.
“If you’ve lost that loving feeling for the web on your phone or tablet, don’t let it bring you down. Just try one of our browsers,” said Lars Boilesen, Opera chief executive (CEO).
In a somewhat confusing statement, Boilesen added: “The sun always shines on TV, but the Opera browser shines on more than 3,000 devices.”
Opera Mobile 11 is available now on the Android, Symbian, Windows 7 and MeeGo platforms, whilst Mini 6 can now be downloaded for J2ME, Android, BlackBerry and Symbian/S60 phones.
Opera will be hoping to gain some traction in the mobile market, given the increasing competitiveness in the PC sector, which today saw the launch of Firefox 4.
