NZ government certifies Microsoft data centre region

The New Zealand government chief digital officer (GCDO) has certified Microsoft’s NZ North data centre region, indicating that it meets the governance processes and security requirements set by the government.

Receiving the Public Cloud Data Centre Certification means that any government agency can provision services based in the region without having to undergo separate security checks.

Microsoft is the third company to receive this certification and the first from the US.

Two other companies have been certified; CDC Data Centres has two Auckland-based facilities and TEAM IM has two data centre areas.

CDC is 49.75% owned by Infratil, an infrastructure investment company headquartered in NZ, and dual-listed on the NZ Exchange and ASX.

TEAM IM is a NZ-owned cloud and managed services provider based in Wellington, with offices in Auckland and Sydney.

The Microsoft NZ North region was announced in May 2020 and officially opened in December 2024. It consists of three physical locations around Auckland

The office of the GCDO sits with the Department of Internal Affairs and is responsible for overseeing the digital transformation of government services.
