If you use TeamViewer to perform remote maintenance of client computers, prepare for a little scepticism after NSW Police Force said the software is being used in an increasing number of remote access scams going around.
TeamViewer provides remote connectivity, desktop sharing, online meetings, web conferencing and file transfer between computers. The vendor and its wares are in no way to blame for the situation - NSW Police have pointed out that the software is completely legitimate.
But the force nonetheless warned citizens to be careful when asked to use the software by unknown third parties.
NSW Police cybercrime squad commander detective superintendent Matt Craft said the community should be aware of these scams as everyone is vulnerable.
“These types of scams are becoming more frequent as scammers take advantage of new technology, products and services to convince the community to provide their personal information,” Craft said.
“Police are reminding the public to be wary of online requests to download software, particularly those with the capability of remote access by third parties.”
Craft added that many of these scams are “quite sophisticated”, but there is almost always a “tell”. “We urge all individuals and businesses to ensure they remain vigilant when dealing with requests to vary account details or payment methods or to download software,” he said.
