MYOB pulls out latest weapon in battle with Xero

MYOB will move to take thousands of Australian accountants to the cloud early this year, with the release of the MYOB Portal.

Due for release in the first quarter of the vendor's 2015 financial year, the MYOB Portal is described as an “online collaboration tool”.

Accountants will be able to use the portal to transfer documents securely with their clients, who will be able to access documents from their smartphone.

Announcing the plan at the MYOB Roadshow in Melbourne today, the vendor claimed the move will have a “significant impact” on the accounting industry in New Zealand and Australia.

Chief executive officer Tim Reed said: “We believe that taking AE [Accountants Enterprise] and AO [Accountants Office] into the cloud will open up new levels of communication, efficiency and visibility between accountants and bookkeepers and their SME clients.”

MYOB claims to have had 500,000 paying clients by the end of 2014, of which 116,000 were using the vendor’s cloud accounting solutions.
