Microsoft's Surface Headphones are pretty exy

Microsoft's first headphones go on sale today, but they'll set you back $499 if you want to pick up the Surface-branded cans.

Good headphones don't come cheap, and you'd expect Microsoft to play in the premium consumer market for its first foray into the audio hardware world. To put that $499 price tag into context though, the most expensive headphones you can buy from JB Hi-Fi, the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H9i, will set you back $699, while the most expensive Beats headphones cost $449.

The only other headphones from JB Hi-Fi that are more expensive are B&O's Beoplay H8i at $649, Audio Technica ATH-DSR7BT at $599 and Sennheiser's RS185 wireless headphone system at $599.

The Surface Headphones are available from the Microsoft store as well as JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman.

Microsoft said the Surface Headphones feature up to 15 hours of wireless playback, a touch interface and 13 levels of noise cancellation, for when 12 levels just isn't enough.

They also come with built-in Cortana functionality and will automatically pause and resume audio when taken off.
