Microsoft partners upset by floating Azure price plan

Microsoft partners are far from comfortable with the company’s decision to price Azure in US dollars, and let local prices move with the exchange rate.

The new pricing scheme kicked off on November 1st when Microsoft launched its new Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program.

That program offers partners rebates for driving cloud consumption. Microsoft also encourages CSP partners to sell services, a strategy it suggests as the way to build deeper, stickier, relationships with its customers. Yet the company has also snuck out news that one of the Azure management tools it offers to CSPs will also be sold direct to customers.

Against that background, CRN asked readers – and especially Microsoft-partnered readers – “What's your reaction to Microsoft shifting Azure prices into $US?”

We offered four response options:

  • Upset that we'll pay more
  • We'll manage it, but wish prices were consistent
  • Not a problem - we already purchase in $US
  • We'll move to other clouds

126 votes later, here’s the result.

As you can see, more than 60 percent of respondents are not happy campers. More than 22 percent even said they’ll move to other clouds.

If that attitude turns into action, Microsoft may experience some pain!

Our next poll has a festive tinge: we’re asking what your channel business wants for Christmas. Vote here!
