Massive NSW email contract extended

A contract held by SMS Management and Technologies to deliver Gmail to more than 1.2 million students in schools and TAFEs in NSW has been extended for another year.

The initial contract involving the IT provider, the Department of Education and Communities, Telstra and Google began in 2008, and has now been extended for 12 months from October 2013. The extended contract is worth $1.4 million.

The project aims to deliver "customised" Gmail accounts to all Department school and TAFE students in NSW.

The initial contract was also to deliver email gateway services to filter and archive all inbound and outbound email, and support and maintenance services, a Department of Education and Communities spokesperson said.

There are in excess of 750,000 school email accounts and 450,000 TAFE student email accounts under the project, according to a spokesperson from SMS Management and Technologies.

The average monthly "clean" volume of messages is between eight and 10 million messages, the spokesperson said.

The project includes an email transmission and storage system, along with account provisioning, archiving, system monitoring and reporting capabilities, according to the SMS spokesperson.

The Department of Education and Communities spokesperson said Exchange is still the platform for Department staff and there are no current plans to change this approach.
